Take the broken panel out, measure the opening it came from, and order glass to those sizes. If the panel is already smashed, measure the aperture between the clamps or the channel and allow the clearance the system was built with, or send us a photograph of the balustrade and we will tell you what to order.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eToughened glass cannot be cut or drilled once it has been through the furnace.\u003c\/strong\u003e Every edge, hole and notch is done beforehand, so a panel 5mm too big is scrap rather than something to trim. Measure the opening in three places and work to the smallest. It is worth ten minutes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eGetting the glass right\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThickness and type are not interchangeable. \u003cstrong\u003e10mm toughened\u003c\/strong\u003e is the standard infill for a framed balustrade, where posts and a handrail carry the load and hold the panel. A \u003cstrong\u003eframeless\u003c\/strong\u003e run with no handrail needs laminated glass, so that a broken pane is held together by the interlayer and the barrier keeps working, which is what BS 6180 expects. If you are not certain which your balustrade is, ask before you order.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eFrosted privacy glass and tinted glass are available in the same thicknesses, and are worth considering on a screen or where a balustrade overlooks a neighbour.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eClamps, posts and fixings\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe clamps we sell are the ones we use on our own installations rather than a cheaper parallel range. Clamp choice depends on the glass thickness and on what you are fixing to: flat back clamps for a flat post or wall, curved back for round tube, and the right screw for steel, timber or masonry, which are three different things. Getting the screw wrong is the most common reason a clamp will not pull up square.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eBuilding from scratch\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eIf you are making your own balustrade rather than repairing ours, be clear about what it has to do. A barrier guarding a drop of more than 600mm has to meet the loadings in BS 6180, and that is a function of the posts, the fixings and the substrate as much as the glass. Components bought individually carry no system certification. Any angle is fine, and you do not need to work the angle out yourself. Send us the two vertical heights and the length along the pitch, or a sketch with the measurements on it, and we will draw the panel and send the drawing over for you to check before anything is cut.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003ePick the width and height bands from the overall size of the panel, corner to corner, not the short side.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eMeasure it properly, because it cannot be recut\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eOnce glass is toughened it cannot be cut, drilled or edged.\u003c\/strong\u003e Every hole, notch and polished edge happens before it goes through the furnace, so a panel that is 5mm too big is scrap, not an adjustment. Toughened glass on its own shatters into fragments and leaves an open drop. Have two people and a clean flat area ready to receive it and check it over before you sign. Other sizes on request.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eWhy this matters more than it looks\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eGlass bearing directly on steel is one of the most reliable ways to break a correctly specified panel.\u003c\/strong\u003e Steel is never perfectly flat and neither is a weld, so the load that should be spread along an edge ends up concentrated on a high spot. Glass is immensely strong across its face and unforgiving about point loading, and the break usually happens days or weeks later rather than on the day, which is what makes the cause so easy to miss.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eA neoprene strip solves it by compressing. It takes up the small variations in the frame, spreads the bearing along the full edge, and isolates the glass from the metal. It is a few pounds of rubber protecting a panel that costs a great deal more.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eWhere to use it\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eUnder walk-on floor glass\u003c\/strong\u003e, on the bearing all round.
