Overhead and sloped glazing with people underneath, framed balustrade infill where a specification has called for laminated, and low level glazing beside a drop\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003ca href=\"\/products\/13-5mm-toughened-laminate-glass\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e13.5mm\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e, two 6mm panes with a 1.52mm interlayer. The entry point for laminated, and it has two jobs: an \u003cstrong\u003einternal base channel\u003c\/strong\u003e frameless balustrade such as \u003ca href=\"\/products\/frameless-glass-balustrade-system-4\"\u003eSystem 4\u003c\/a\u003e \u003cstrong\u003ewith no handrail\u003c\/strong\u003e, and an \u003cstrong\u003eexternal post-supported\u003c\/strong\u003e system with no top rail, where the posts carry the load but the glass still has to stay in place if it is broken. Stairs, landings and mezzanines\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003ca href=\"\/products\/17-5mm-toughened-laminate-glass\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e17.5mm\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e for frameless with \u003cstrong\u003eno handrail\u003c\/strong\u003e: externally on any system, and internally too on a side-fixed system such as \u003ca href=\"\/products\/side-fixed-glass-balustrade-system-7\"\u003eSystem 7\u003c\/a\u003e, where the taller pane puts more bending force into the glass. Where a continuous handrail runs along the top instead, toughened is used\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003ca href=\"\/products\/21-5mm-toughened-laminate-glass\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e21.5mm\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e for taller panels, longer spans, and exposed or public sites\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eSend us the panel sizes, the barrier height, what is holding the glass, whether there is a handrail and whether it is inside or out, and we will tell you which we would supply.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eWhen you do not need laminated at all\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWorth saving your money where it is not earning anything. \u003cstrong\u003eIf the glass is a simple infill held all round by channel, clamps, posts and rails, and nobody has specified laminated, then \u003ca href=\"\/products\/10mm-clear-toughened-glass-panels\"\u003e10mm clear toughened\u003c\/a\u003e does the same job for less.\u003c\/strong\u003e That is the panel we cut more of than anything else.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eLaminated earns its cost where the consequence of a break matters, not as a general upgrade. The exception is absolute: a \u003cstrong\u003eframeless balustrade with no handrail has to be laminated\u003c\/strong\u003e, because the glass is the whole barrier and has to keep working after an impact. The panels here are for vertical work. Do not substitute a balustrade panel for a floor.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eStandards, edges and the interlayer line\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eLaminated to BS EN 14449, toughened plies to BS EN 12150, impact classified to BS EN 12600. Polished edges and a proper 5mm radius corner on all four corners as standard.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eLamination also changes what happens in the rare case of \u003cstrong\u003espontaneous breakage\u003c\/strong\u003e, where a toughened pane fails on its own because of a microscopic nickel sulphide inclusion. It is a known property of toughened glass rather than a fault, and glass is excluded from our 10 year warranty either way. A laminated panel is no less likely to suffer one, because its plies are toughened glass, but the interlayer holds the fragments and the panel stays in its fixings. That is normal rather than a fault, and on a frameless run with the top edge on show it is simply part of how laminated glass looks. A clear interlayer is standard; obscure, white translucent and tinted interlayers can be priced in, so ask rather than guessing from a dropdown.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eMeasure it properly, because it cannot be recut\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eBoth panes are toughened before they are bonded, so nothing can be cut, drilled or edged afterwards.\u003c\/strong\u003e Every hole, notch, cut-out and polished edge is set out before the furnace and the lamination line. A panel 5mm too big is scrap, not an adjustment, and there is no trimming a laminated panel on site.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eMeasure the aperture in three places and work to the smallest, and allow a sensible gap for the channel or fixings. If you are side fixing with \u003ca href=\"\/products\/side-fixing-glass-adapters\"\u003eside fixing adapters\u003c\/a\u003e, each fixing point needs a hole of at least 24mm, so send the hole positions with your sizes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eOrdering, weight and delivery\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003ePick the width and height bands your panel falls into, then send your exact millimetres and we confirm them before anything is made. Smallest band 500 x 500mm, largest size online 2000 x 1100mm, anything beyond quoted individually. Holes, notches and cut-outs are priced individually.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eAllow for the weight.\u003c\/strong\u003e Laminated is appreciably heavier than a single toughened pane of the same size, roughly 27kg per square metre at 10.8mm and 34kg at 13.5mm, so a large panel is a genuine two or three person lift rather than something to wrestle up a staircase alone. Most travel on a pallet, usually tail lift with a pump truck, though that is how it normally works rather than something we can guarantee, so tell us before you order if you need it confirmed. Four common jobs:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eOverhead and sloped glazing. Roof lights, canopy glazing and anything with people underneath it. What decides it is how the glass is held and whether there is a handrail along the top. That is how it usually works rather than a service we can guarantee, so if you need a tail lift or kerbside help confirmed for your delivery, tell us before you order and we will check it. Have two people and a clean flat area ready to receive it and check it over before you sign.
