Take the rail away and the glass is the whole barrier. It then has to stay in place after breakage rather than dropping out as granules, which means toughened and laminated rather than toughened alone. That is the thinking behind BS 6180, and it is why the glass on this balcony is thicker and dearer than on our railed designs.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWorth knowing, because it is not an upgrade we have bolted on. It is what a frameless balcony has to be.
