Commercial, public and multi-occupancy buildings are designed to higher imposed loads, so if the balcony is going anywhere other than a private dwelling, tell us at enquiry stage and we will design and price it to the right loading. Mesh rather than a solid deck for three reasons, and they all matter on something this size:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eWater and leaves fall straight through.\u003c\/strong\u003e A solid tray at this depth collects rain against the wall and silts up with leaves, and there is no practical way to sweep it from inside.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eLight still reaches the window below.\u003c\/strong\u003e A Juliet usually sits directly over a window or door, and a solid floor puts that opening in shadow.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eIt keeps the weight down.\u003c\/strong\u003e Everything here is carried by wall fixings alone, so less weight means less load into the brickwork.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eIt is a proper balcony floor.\u003c\/strong\u003e The platform is designed to the same imposed loading as the rest of our balcony range, 2.5kN\/sqm spread with a 2.0kN concentrated load to BS EN 1991-1-1, which is higher than the figure that applies to a floor inside the house. What a 300mm projection limits is the room you have, not what the floor will carry. What changes is how they are put together, because past 2100mm a single fully welded balcony is too large and too heavy to handle safely on a delivery vehicle or to lift into position on a wall.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo both are made as a bolt-together design instead of one welded piece. The top and bottom rails come as separate lengths, and the infill bars are welded up into individual panels that bolt up and down onto those rails. You build it on the wall rather than lifting a finished balcony onto it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eAt 3000mm the rails also step up from 42mm to 60mm diameter.\u003c\/strong\u003e That is not cosmetic. A three metre span puts far more bending into the top and bottom rails than a 2.4m one does, and the heavier section is what keeps the load capacity where it needs to be across that distance. It is the main reason the 3000mm costs what it does.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eClose up you will see the bolted connections between the panels and the rails, where the smaller sizes are welded throughout, and on the 3000mm the rails are visibly chunkier. From the ground, or from inside the room, they read almost identically to the welded sizes.
