Balustrades built on a posted frame with a handrail, in stainless steel, hot dip galvanised steel or powdercoated steel in any RAL colour. Infilled with 10mm toughened glass, or with tensioned stainless steel wire rope where you want the view kept as open as possible. Priced by the metre and made to your sizes in our Sheffield workshop.

Why most people should buy a framed system

Frameless glass gets the attention, but framed is what we sell most of, and usually for good reasons rather than budget alone.

The posts carry the load, so the infill is infill rather than structure. That means 10mm toughened glass instead of thick laminated, lighter panels, simpler fixings and a much lower price per metre. It is far more forgiving to install, because the posts are bolted down at intervals rather than the whole run depending on one continuous channel being dead level. And if a pane ever gets broken, you swap that panel rather than taking a run apart.

The handrail matters too. Because a continuous handrail runs across the top and is capable of retaining the glass, toughened glass is acceptable here where a handrail free frameless run would need laminated. That single difference is most of the cost gap between the two.

Glass infill or wire rope infill

Both use the same posts and handrail, so the decision is about what you want between them.

  • 10mm toughened glass gives you a solid, wipe clean panel that also acts as a windbreak. It is the right answer on an exposed terrace or a balcony where you want to sit out without the wind coming through, and where you want nothing to climb.
  • Tensioned stainless steel wire rope gives the most open view of anything we make, and it never needs cleaning. Horizontal wires at close centres between the posts, tensioned with rigging screws. It suits decking, rural views and internal mezzanines, and it costs less per metre than glass.

Wire rope is not suitable everywhere. Horizontal wires can be climbed, so it is the wrong choice where young children will use the space unsupervised, and building control will sometimes say so. It also gives no wind protection at all. If either of those matters, buy the glass.

Which metal, and why it changes the price

  • Stainless steel is the premium option and the one for coastal, commercial and feature work. Satin brushed as standard, or mirror polished where the balustrade is meant to be looked at. Grade 316 outdoors.
  • Hot dip galvanised steel is the value choice. Bright silver weathering to grey, zero upkeep, decades outdoors. If you do not need a colour, this is the most balustrade per pound we make.
  • Galvanised then powdercoated puts any RAL colour on top of the zinc, so a chip on site does not start rusting. Anthracite grey RAL 7016 is far and away the most requested.
  • Powdercoated only, with no galvanising underneath, is cheaper still but is for internal use. Outdoors it will eventually let go at any damaged edge.

The handrail is a choice of its own: tubular stainless, steel colour matched to the posts, or a machined hardwood profile over a steel flat bar so the steel still carries the loading.

Fixing detail and corners

Posts are base plate fixed as standard, bolting down through the deck or landing. They can be concreted into the ground instead, or side fixed to the face of the structure, which keeps the floor finish unbroken and pushes the balustrade outboard so you keep the full width of the terrace. Side fixing costs more per metre because of the heavier bracketry.

Corners are priced into each product rather than sold separately. Count every change of direction: an L shape is one corner, a U shape around three sides is two. Add every leg of the run together for the total length.

Heights and glass options

1100mm high as standard, 900mm internally and on stairs and ramps. Frosted privacy glass and tinted glass are available on every glass system in this range.

The technical bit

Nothing here matters unless you are writing the specification or answering building control.

  • Standards. Designed to BS 6180
  • Certification. UKCA marked, made under our own documented BS EN 1090-2 factory production control, independently audited by Alcumus ISOQAR. More about our certification.
  • Loading. Tell us if it is going into a commercial or public building so we specify the correct barrier loading

Not a standard size?

This is made to order in our own Sheffield workshop, so it can just as easily be made to your dimensions instead. Send a photo and rough sizes and we will price it.
