Made to last, not made to a price

Most garden structures sold in this country are built down to a price and it shows by the second winter. A thin wall frame, paint sprayed onto bare steel, and rust weeping out of the joints where the water sits. We have all been trained to expect it and to replace the thing rather than question it.

Steel outdoors does not have to rot. It rots because the section was light and because there was no zinc under the colour. Everything here is hot dip galvanised before it is powdercoated, so a chip from a ladder or a bramble does not start a rust spot, and the sections are sized for the load rather than for the shipping cost. A pergola is a structure that stands in the weather for twenty years, not a seasonal garden product.

Screening with metal, or screening with glass

A screen is doing one of two jobs, and which one decides the material.

If you want to break up a space, support planting or put something attractive between you and the neighbours, metal is the answer. A trellis frame or a decorative panel gives you pattern and structure, costs a fraction of glass, and a climber will grow straight through it.

If you want shelter rather than privacy, glass is the one. A metal screen does nothing to stop wind, and on an exposed terrace or a seating area that is usually the whole point. Our 1.8 metre glass windbreak and privacy screen cuts the wind while keeping the light and the view, and in frosted glass it gives privacy as well. Where you want something lower that still reads as open, the System 2 stainless and glass works as a screen as readily as it does as a balustrade.

One thing worth being clear about: a screen is not a barrier. If there is a drop of more than 600mm on the other side, you need a compliant balustrade rather than a screen, and the frameless balustrade range covers that.

Everything here is made to order

A pergola is sized to the space it is going in, and screen and trellis panels are cut to the opening rather than trimmed to fit on site. Send a photograph and rough sizes and we will price it.

Fixings to suit timber, masonry or a concrete base are included in the quote, because what you are fixing to matters as much as the frame itself. If the structure is carrying a roof, climbing planting or anything that catches the wind, tell us when you enquire and we will size the sections for it. A pergola with planting on it carries a great deal more load in a gale than an empty one does.

Looking after them

An occasional wash down with warm soapy water, and a look at the base fixings once a year. Our product maintenance guide covers the powdercoated and galvanised finishes.

Not a standard size?

This is made to order in our own Sheffield workshop, so it can just as easily be made to your dimensions instead. Send a photo and rough sizes and we will price it.
