Made to order. This is manufactured for your order rather than supplied from stock, so it cannot be returned or refunded as an unwanted purchase. Returns information.
10mm frosted toughened glass, cut to your millimetres. This is the frosted panel we cut most of, because 10mm is the thickness most balustrades take. Polished edges, radiused corners, toughened to BS EN 12150 and impact classified to BS EN 12600.
How to order
Pick the width band and the height band your panel falls into. We then cut it to the exact millimetres you give us.
- 500 x 500mm is the smallest band. We will happily make a 400 x 400mm panel, so pick the 500 x 500mm band and send us your exact sizes
- Largest size online is 2000 x 1100mm. Anything larger, or an unusual shape, is quoted individually - send us the sizes and we will price it
- Set the quantity to the number of panels you need at that size. Different sizes need adding separately
- Send us your exact sizes after you order and we will confirm them back to you before the glass is cut
Raking panels for staircases
If the panel follows the pitch of a flight rather than sitting square, choose "Raking for a staircase" under panel shape. Any angle is fine, and you do not need to work the angle out yourself. Send us the two vertical heights and the length along the pitch, or a sketch with the measurements on it, and we will draw the panel and send the drawing over for you to check before anything is cut.
Pick the width and height bands from the overall size of the panel, corner to corner, not the short side.
Why frosted rather than clear
Frosted is our privacy glass. It is the same toughened panel as the clear equivalent, sandblasted on one face, so it behaves identically in structural terms and is fixed in exactly the same way. The only difference is what you can see through it.
With air behind it, it holds back detail while still passing light, which is the point: a shower or bathroom screen, a boundary between two properties, the neighbouring side of a balcony with clear on the view. How much it hides falls away as whatever is behind it gets closer, and in direct contact it is close to transparent, which is explained in full on the frosted and opaque glass page.
If you want some cover rather than full obscuring, frosted is a step too far. Tinted sits between clear and frosted, giving shapes and movement rather than detail. People often ask for frosted and then realise they have blanked out the view they built the balcony for.
Is 10mm the right thickness?
For a framed balustrade system, with channel, clamps, posts and rails, yes. 10mm is the standard and covers the large majority of jobs. Our 10mm clear page sets out the thickness question in full, and the answer is the same whichever finish you choose.
In short: 8mm where it is fully framed in timber, 10mm for framed balustrade systems, 12mm for internal doors or an internal run with a handrail, 15mm frameless with a handrail.
Measure it properly, because it cannot be recut
Once glass is toughened it cannot be cut, drilled or edged. Every hole, notch and polished edge happens before it goes through the furnace, so a panel that is 5mm too big is scrap, not an adjustment. Holes, notches, cut-outs and shaped panels are priced individually, so tell us what you need before you order and we will price it. Measure the aperture in three places and work to the smallest, and allow a sensible gap for the clamps or channel you are fitting into rather than cutting it tight. Tell us which face you want sandblasted. For anything unusual, use our bespoke service.
Delivery and handling
Most of our glass goes out on a pallet, and in the great majority of cases the vehicle has a tail lift and the driver has a pump truck. That is how it usually works rather than a service we can guarantee, so if you need a tail lift or kerbside help confirmed for your delivery, tell us before you order and we will check it. Have two people and a clean flat area ready to receive it and check it over before you sign. Toughened glass is strong across the face and vulnerable on the edges and corners, which is where almost all breakages start.
Polished edges and a proper 5mm radius corner as standard on all four corners, not the dubbed corner knocked off by hand that a lot of suppliers will quote you. Details on our material and finish standards page.

A note on specification
The guidance on this page reflects what we typically supply for jobs of this kind, and is offered in good faith to help you order the right thing. It is not a structural specification and it is not a substitute for project-specific design. Barrier heights, spans, loadings, fixings, substrates and exposure all vary from site to site, and the final specification for your project remains the responsibility of you, your designer, your structural engineer or your building control body. We manufacture and supply to the sizes and specification you give us. If you are unsure, send us the details before ordering and we will tell you what we would normally supply for a job like yours.
Survey and installation
We survey, we install nationwide with our own teams, and we sell supply only if you have your own fitter. The detail is in the product description above. For a price on your job, email us your postcode.
