Which pattern to choose

Ball top is the classic English boundary railing, solid round bars finished with cast ball finials. It is the pattern you see on Victorian front walls and churchyards, and the one most conservation officers accept without an argument. Hoop top has the bars formed into continuous hoops instead, so there are no points and nothing to catch on, which is why it is specified for schools, nurseries, playgrounds and housing developments. Ornate railings take either pattern further with scrollwork and decorative detail, and are the ones we make most often for ramps, steps and period restorations.

Made to last, not made to a price

Somewhere along the way we all got used to garden metalwork lasting a year or two. A gate from a garden centre, a panel of decorative railing, an arch. It looks right for one summer, and by the second winter it is weeping rust out of every joint and the hinges have seized. That has become normal and it should not be. Steel outdoors does not have to rot. It rots because the sections were light and because the finish was paint sprayed straight onto bare metal.

Ours are solid bar and proper section, welded here, and hot dip galvanised rather than painted. The zinc is sacrificial, so it protects the steel even where the coating gets scratched by a mower or a wheelie bin. Victorian railings are still standing on Sheffield streets a hundred and forty years on. There is no reason a railing bought today should not outlast the fence next to it.

Finish is a real decision, not just a colour

Everything here is offered three ways and the price follows the preparation, not the paint. Raw steel is the cheapest but it will start to rust within days outdoors, so only take it if you are priming and painting it yourself. Hot dip galvanised needs no upkeep at all and lasts decades, but it is bright silver weathering to grey rather than a colour. Galvanised then powdercoated puts your colour on top of zinc, so a chip on site does not start rusting, and that is what we supply for most school, housing and public work.

Made to your sizes

Nothing is a standard panel. Measure the run, order to the nearest metre, and we make it to your exact dimensions and send you an AutoCAD drawing to approve before anything is cut. Infill bars are set out so a 100mm sphere cannot pass between them, which is what Part K requires. Raked runs to steps, curved sections, matching gates and additional decorative features are quoted individually, so send us the sizes and a photo of what you are matching.

Looking after them

Galvanised railings need nothing. Powdercoated ones want an occasional wash with warm soapy water, and a gate wants its hinge bolts and latch checking once a year. Our product maintenance guide covers all three finishes.

Not a standard size?

This is made to order in our own Sheffield workshop, so it can just as easily be made to your dimensions instead. Send a photo and rough sizes and we will price it.
