Choosing a thickness

All four floor glass builds are toughened and laminated. The panes are heat treated for strength and bonded together with an interlayer, and each pane is a structural ply in its own right, so if one is ever broken the remaining panes carry the load and the panel still works as a floor. Thickness is driven by the span and the load, not by the look.

  • 25.5mm: shorter domestic spans, landings and small light wells.
  • 31.5mm: the usual choice for domestic floors and walkways.
  • 33mm: three layers rather than two, for longer spans or where extra redundancy is wanted.
  • 39mm: our heaviest build, for commercial traffic and the longest spans.

If you are not sure, send us the opening size, the support detail and what will be walking on it, and we will tell you which thickness works.

How the sizes are priced

Each listing has a drop down of size bands up to 2000 x 1500mm. Pick the next band up from your own panel, so the band is equal to or larger than your glass in both directions, then send us your exact sizes and we will confirm them back to you before anything is made. Larger panels are available by request, subject to confirming you can offload them safely.

Options

Invisible non-slip treatment raises slip resistance without changing how the glass looks or what you can see through it. Painted black borders, 50mm or up to 100mm, sit between the laminated layers so they cannot wear off, and frosted borders are available on request. Ritec ClearShield is an antimicrobial surface treatment that resists mould growth and helps water run off the glass; it does not stop condensation forming.

For permanently wet conditions, ask us about checkerplate or etched glass. It gives a higher slip rating but does change what you can see through the panel.

Frames and support

Floor glass needs a continuous, level bearing. Neoprene support strips take up small tolerances and keep glass off bare steel. If you need the frame as well, our walk-on glass floor with steel framework is supplied as a complete unit, made in our Sheffield workshop.

More on loadings, spans and balustrade requirements in our glass floor building regulations guide, and on thickness, support and cost in the walk-on glass floor buying guide.

Not a standard size?

This is made to order in our own Sheffield workshop, so it can just as easily be made to your dimensions instead. Send a photo and rough sizes and we will price it.
