Ground set or bolted down

This is the decision that governs the job, and it is worth getting right before you order.

Concreted into the ground is the stronger of the two and the one to use on soft ground, gravel, soil or a grass verge. Posts are made longer, holes are dug, and the post is set in concrete. It takes longer, it means digging, and the post positions have to be set out accurately because there is no adjustment once the concrete goes off.

Base plated and bolted down suits an existing concrete path, a slab or a solid paved surface. Much quicker, no digging, and the rail can be lifted later if it ever needs to be. It is only as strong as what is under it, so it needs a decent thickness of concrete rather than slabs bedded on sand.

Tell us which at drawing stage and we will make the posts to suit. A run can use both where the ground changes along its length.

Where these get used

  • Garden and driveway steps with no wall alongside
  • Sloping paths and access routes to a front or back door
  • Ramps, where a rail is needed on the open side
  • Car parks, yards and service routes in commercial settings
  • Anywhere a wall rail cannot be fixed because the wall is not sound

Specification

  • 42mm tube, inside the 32mm to 50mm graspable range Part M expects
  • Typically 900mm to 1000mm above the pitch line of the steps or the ramp surface
  • Post spacing set on the drawing so the rail does not flex between supports
  • Ends returned down or back, so nothing catches on a sleeve or a bag
  • In a public or commercial setting, the rail can continue 300mm beyond the top and bottom step as Part M expects
  • Brushed stainless steel, grade 316 for outdoors, or galvanised and powdercoated steel in any RAL colour

Made to your length in our own Sheffield workshop. If the rail also has to guard a drop of more than 600mm then it is a balustrade rather than a handrail, and you want our balustrade range instead.

Not a standard size?

This is made to order in our own Sheffield workshop, so it can just as easily be made to your dimensions instead. Send a photo and rough sizes and we will price it.
