What you actually need

A washing line run is two fixing points and a line between them. Most people use two poles, one at each end, but you do not have to. If there is a house wall, a garden wall or a solid outbuilding at one end, a wall bracket does the same job for less money, with no second hole to dig and the ground left clear underneath.

Then you need line. Plain rope stretches and sags under a full load, which is why we sell a steel core line instead. And pegs: plastic ones go brittle and snap, so ours are stainless.

Ground sockets

A ground socket is concreted into the ground in place of the pole. The pole then drops in and lifts back out by hand, so you can clear the garden to mow or take the line down over winter. It also means the steel sitting in wet ground for the next twenty years is a cheap socket rather than your pole. One per pole.

Pulleys and props

A pulley lets you drop the line to load it and haul it back up without unthreading anything. It needs something to tension against, so it works with the loop and cleat pole and the multi-line post, not with the fixed line poles. One pulley per end you want to work from.

An adjustable prop is the answer to a long run. Past 6 metres between poles the line sags whatever you do, and the extra pull puts undue stress on the poles themselves. A prop takes the weight out of the middle for a fraction of the cost of a third pole.

Delivery

Accessories are held in stock and normally with you in 2 to 3 working days. Collections are welcome from our Sheffield workshop. There is more on sizes, spacing and setting poles in the washing line pole guide.

Not a standard size?

This is made to order in our own Sheffield workshop, so it can just as easily be made to your dimensions instead. Send a photo and rough sizes and we will price it.
