Steel spiral staircases, designed and made to order in our own Sheffield workshop. Every one is built to your floor to floor height and the diameter you have room for, for domestic or commercial use, designed to BS 5395 and Approved Document K.

The price shown covers a spiral up to 1200mm diameter with a rise up to 2500mm, in a single finish: galvanised for an external stair, or powdercoated for an internal one. Galvanised and then powdercoated is the third option in the dropdown, and it is the one to pick for an external stair that also has to look right.

UKCA marking is a legal requirement for structural steelwork placed on the market in the UK, and a staircase is structural steelwork. Every stair leaves here UKCA marked and certified to BS EN 1090-2.

Is a spiral the right answer for your space?

A spiral is the most space efficient staircase there is, which is why it ends up in cellars, loft conversions, mezzanines and tight corners where a straight flight simply will not go.

Be realistic about the width, though. The usable width of a spiral is a good deal narrower than the diameter suggests, because the treads taper towards the centre column and you only walk on the outer part of them. That makes a spiral excellent for occasional access and awkward for carrying a wardrobe. If it is the main staircase in a house and furniture has to go up it, a straight flight or a dog leg is usually the better call, and we make those too.

Curved and helical staircases

A spiral turns around a fixed central column. A curved or helical stair has no column at all, so the flight sweeps round on its own stringers with a continuous curved handrail, and the treads stay a usable width all the way across rather than tapering to a point.

We build both. Curved and helical flights are bespoke by definition, so they are drawn and quoted individually rather than priced here. Send the floor to floor height, a plan of the opening and a photograph to sales@diomet.co.uk and we will price it. There is also a curved steel staircase page with indicative pricing on it.

What we need to quote it

Two measurements get you a price: the floor to floor height, which is finished floor to finished floor rather than ceiling height, and the diameter you can fit. Tell us whether it is internal or external and what it is being used for, and send a photo of the opening. Email sales@diomet.co.uk or ring 0114 243 9009.

Spirals are custom work by their nature. Anything larger in diameter, taller in rise, or with a particular layout, handrail detail or colour is quoted individually, and we do those routinely. Send us the sizes and we will price it.

Our steel staircase FAQs answer the other common ones, including whether a spiral can be the only staircase in a house or a commercial building, and why the usable width of a spiral is narrower than the diameter suggests.

Finish

External stairs are hot dip galvanised, and can be powdercoated on top of that so there is zinc under the colour and a chipped edge does not start rusting. Internal stairs are powdercoated directly to the steel, since there is nothing to protect against. Any RAL colour, and custom colours, designs and layouts are available throughout.

Do you deliver and install?

By arrangement. A spiral is heavy, awkward and goes in as a kit of parts, so we agree delivery and installation with you as part of the quotation rather than charging a flat rate at checkout. Our own site teams install nationwide, or we supply only if you have your own fitters.

Going in as a kit of parts is usually the point. The centre column, treads and balustrade arrive separately and assemble in place, so a spiral will go into a cellar, a loft or a tight corner that a made up flight could never be carried into.

Typically 6 to 8 weeks from approved drawing. Every stair is drawn and issued to you for approval before anything is cut.

Is it certified, and what paperwork do I get?

UKCA marking is not a badge or an optional extra. A stair supplied without it should not be going onto your building.

Dio-Met is certified to BS EN 1090-2 with documented factory production control, coded welders and calibrated equipment. Every stair leaves here UKCA marked, with the paperwork and certification issued against the goods once they are made and dispatched. A fair number of the cheap stairs sold online carry no marking at all, so it is worth asking the question before you buy on price alone.

If your building control officer wants more than that, we will provide a specification sheet for the stair, and in practice that is usually enough to settle it.

Structural calculations are a separate piece of work. We can provide them, but they are always chargeable on an individual basis and are never included in the price on this page. If you know calculations are going to be asked for, say so when you enquire and we will price them alongside the stair.

Designed to BS 5395 and Approved Document K, and certified to BS EN 1090-2. Made by coded welders under our own documented factory production control.

Fixings

Every fixing needed to bolt the staircase together is supplied with it.

Wall and floor fixings are not supplied on a supply only order. The right anchor depends on what your building is made of and what condition it is in, and that is not a call we can make from here. Fixing points come drilled ready and your installer selects anchors to suit the substrate. Where we install, we take that decision on site and provide them.

Every one of these was drawn, made and delivered by us. Photographs, dimensions and what the job involved.

All staircase projects

Not sure a spiral is right? Our steel staircase buying guide and staircase building regulations guide set out the options, and the rest of the range is under steel staircases.

Trial built before it ships

Something this size cannot be delivered in one piece, so it is bolted together here first. We build it up whole in our own Sheffield workshop and check it, before anything goes out for galvanising or powdercoating and before any glass is cut. Only then does it come apart for delivery. See how we trial build, with photographs of recent jobs.

Survey and installation

We survey, we install nationwide with our own teams, and we sell supply only if you have your own fitter. The detail is in the product description above. For a price on your job, email us your postcode.
