What it is for
A turnbuckle is how you take the slack out of a sail and, just as importantly, how you drop it again in a few minutes when the forecast turns. Fitting one at every corner is what makes taking a sail down ahead of high winds and over winter a practical job rather than one you put off.
Use it to take up slack, not to pull the sail tight. A shade sail wants to be snug rather than drum tight. Over-tensioning is what bends posts, loosens footings and tears fabric at the corners. If water is pooling on the sail, reset the corner heights to give it more fall rather than winding the turnbuckles up harder.
