42mm tubular 316 grade stainless steel, brushed, with a 2mm wall. 316 is the marine grade, the one specified near the coast, and it is a genuinely different material from the 304 most garden products use.

Includes 12mm solid stainless tie-bars to tie your lines around and a semi-domed stainless steel cap on the top. Solid bar, not tube, so there is nothing to crush or bend when you pull a line up tight, and the cap closes the tube off so water cannot sit inside it.

No coating to chip, scratch or repaint, which is the main reason people choose this one over a galvanised and powdercoated pole. Made in our own Sheffield workshop, and all three lengths are held in stock.

For a fixed line, tied off around the tie-bars. This pole is not built for a pulley system or a retractable line, so if you want to drop the whole line to waist height to load it and then haul it back up, the loop and cleat pole is the one, because it has a cleat to tension against. On a fixed line the answer is a line prop, below.

Raising and lowering a fixed line

The line sits at the height you tie it, so a line prop is what you use to raise and lower it. Push the prop up under the line, somewhere around the middle of the span, and it lifts the loaded line clear of the ground. That is exactly the moment you want the height, because a full load of wet washing is heavy and it sags most in the middle, which is where the sheets end up on the grass. To lower it again you take the prop out and the line drops back to where it was tied. Nothing to unthread, nothing to re-tension, and no reason to change the pole.

Ours is aluminium and adjusts from 1.35 metres closed to 2.7 metres extended, so you set it to the height the line actually needs rather than being stuck with one. It is also worth having on any run over 6 metres, where the prop is carrying the span rather than setting the height.

Price is per pole. These are sold as single lengths, so a standard washing line run needs two, one at each end. Order the quantity you need.

Keeping it bright: a wash down with mild soap and water every few months is all stainless needs. Left completely alone outdoors it can dull slightly over time, a little faster near the coast or a busy road. More on our material and finish standards page.

Fitting and delivery

Dig a hole about 500mm deep, stand the pole plumb and concrete it in. Postcrete sets in five to ten minutes. Leave it 24 hours before you hang a line on it, or the pole will lean. Prefer to be able to lift the pole out again? Concrete in a ground socket instead.

Allow for that buried 500mm when you pick a size. A 2.5 metre pole gives you about 2 metres of usable height, which suits most gardens.

Keep to a maximum run of 6 metres between poles. Past that the line sags under a full load, and the extra pull puts undue stress on the poles themselves. On a longer run, put a line prop in the middle.

Stocked items are usually with you within 2 to 3 working days. Made to order sizes and colours take longer, and the lead time is shown against the option. Collections are welcome from our Sheffield workshop if you would rather pick up and save the carriage, just get in touch to arrange a time.
