Start with your glass thickness

The clamp has to match the glass, not approximately but exactly. A clamp with the wrong rubber set will either not grip or will put point pressure on the pane, and glass fails at the point you pinch it. Every clamp here is listed by the thickness it takes.

  • 8-10mm, the one we sell most. 10mm is the standard infill for framed balustrade systems
  • 12mm for internal doors and internal runs with a handrail
  • 13.5mm for laminated glass on a frameless run with a handrail
  • 15mm, the frameless toughened thickness
  • 17.5mm for external frameless laminated glass
  • 21.5mm and 25.5mm for the heaviest laminated panels

If you are not sure what your existing glass is, measure the edge with a vernier or send us a photograph of the edge against a tape. The interlayer lines in laminated glass are visible at the edge and are usually the giveaway.

Flat back or curved back

This is the second question and it catches people out. Flat back bolts to a flat surface: a wall, a flat bar post, a steel plate. Curved back is radiused to sit against round tube, normally 42mm, so it beds properly instead of rocking on two edges.

Use the one that matches what you are fixing to. A flat clamp pulled down onto round tube does not sit square, and the glass ends up loaded unevenly.

Which finish?

  • Brushed 316 stainless is the default, and the right answer for anything external. Satin finish, hides marks well
  • Mirror polished 316 where the balustrade is a feature, or on a coastal property where the smooth grain free surface sheds salt better
  • Powdercoated to any RAL, to match a colour matched balustrade rather than contrast with it
  • Galvanised Zintec where the finish needs to match galvanised steelwork
  • Plated steel, a lower cost clamp with a brushed stainless look. Indoor use only, and it is not stainless, so do not put it outside

Joining panels rather than fixing them

Three clamps here do a different job. The inline glass to glass clamp joins two panels in a straight run with no post between them. The 90 degree corner clamp turns a corner the same way. The T shaped bracket fixes through the glass rather than gripping its edge, so the panel needs a 24mm hole, specified before toughening. Glass cannot be drilled afterwards, so that one has to be decided at order stage.

Fixings are separate

Clamps come with the rubbers and the clamp bolts. The screws or anchors that fix them to your structure depend on what you are fixing to, so they are listed separately: machine screws for steel, screws for timber or masonry, and resin anchors for concrete.

Also here: the 30mm clamp adaptor for 8mm to 12mm glass, and the full range of balustrade components. Need the glass as well? See clear toughened panels cut to your sizes.

Not a standard size?

This is made to order in our own Sheffield workshop, so it can just as easily be made to your dimensions instead. Send a photo and rough sizes and we will price it.
