The sizes above are your structural opening, not the balcony.
A Juliet balcony has to fix back to solid structure at each side, so it is made wider than the opening it guards. Allow 150mm each side, about 300mm wider overall. Choose the size of the opening itself and we build to suit it.
Check the typical detail drawing (PDF) before you order. It shows the opening, the overall width and where it fixes.

Frameless. The glass is carried in an aluminium channel at each side, and nothing runs along the top, so there is no handrail on this balcony and nothing across the opening to look through.
The channel comes as aluminium. It can be powdercoated to match the window frames or the render for an extra charge, if you would rather it did not read as bare metal against the house.
It is also the widest frameless Juliet we make, covering openings up to 2400mm, where the Modern frameless on button fixings stops at 1800mm. If you want the frameless look on a wide opening, this is the one that gets you there.
Why a frameless Juliet uses laminated glass
On a Juliet with a top rail, the rail is still there if a pane is damaged, so toughened glass on its own is normally accepted. Take the rail away and the glass is the whole barrier. It then has to stay in place after breakage rather than dropping out as granules, which means toughened and laminated rather than toughened alone. That is the thinking behind BS 6180, and it is why the glass on this balcony is thicker and dearer than on our railed designs.
Worth knowing, because it is not an upgrade we have bolted on. It is what a frameless balcony has to be. If the cost is the deciding factor, the honest answer is a railed design rather than a thinner frameless one, and the Wembley gets you a very similar clean run of glass with the fixings concealed inside a slotted rail.
What thickness of glass will I get?
13.5mm, 17.5mm or 21.5mm, decided by the width you order. A wider opening puts more load into the same two channels, so the glass steps up to suit it. You do not need to work that out yourself. Tell us the width and we specify the glass.
- Clear toughened and laminated safety glass, polished edges, radius corners
- Designed to the 0.74kN/m horizontal line load that applies to balconies and Juliet balconies
- UKCA marked to BS EN 1090-2, execution class EXC2. The UKCA mark and the Declaration of Performance are issued against the goods on completion of fabrication and supplied with the order.
- Designed in accordance with BS 6180 for domestic applications. Commercial, public and multi-occupancy buildings carry higher imposed loads, so tell us if it is going anywhere other than a private dwelling and we will design and price it accordingly
Side fixed or face fixed?
The channels click-lock and will go either into the reveal at the sides of the opening or onto the face of the wall. Which you choose is usually settled by what is around the opening: render, brickwork, a bay, a sill in the way. Some drilling on site is normally needed either way.
Say which way you are fixing when you order, because it changes the width of glass we cut. If you are not sure, send us a photograph of the opening and we will tell you which one suits it.
A Juliet balcony does not fix to the uPVC door frame itself: a window frame is not a structural element. The fixings go into the masonry either side of the opening. Our Canterbury Juliet in Stockton-on-Tees shows a face fixed example on uPVC French doors.
Sizes and finishes
- Widths: six bands up to 2400mm
- Channel: 50 x 40mm anodised aluminium, brushed as standard
- Powder coating: black, white or anthracite grey. Ask if you want a different colour
Take the widest of three measurements across the structural opening rather than an average. The balcony has to cover the opening at its widest point and the fixings land outside it, so the widest figure is the one that matters. Our Juliet balcony measuring guide shows where to measure and how much we add each side.
What is included
- Two fixing channels, complete with end caps and glass rubbers
- The toughened and laminated glass panel
- UKCA certificate and Declaration of Performance
- 10 year warranty
- Wall fixings are not supplied: your installer sources anchors to suit the substrate, because the right ones depend on what you are fixing into
Installation
- Arrives in kit form and goes together with reasonable DIY skills
- Fixing instructions come with it and we are on the end of the phone if you get stuck
- Installation by our own site teams is available as an optional extra. Ask for it with your enquiry and we will price it alongside the balcony.
Laminated glass at these thicknesses is heavy, so plan on more than one pair of hands. Working at height is your responsibility. Use properly erected access equipment.
Delivery
Delivered to mainland UK, with the cost added at checkout. See our delivery information for excluded zones.
Does a Juliet balcony need planning permission?
Generally not, and that is the main practical reason people fit one instead of a walk-out. Balconies and raised platforms are not permitted development, but a Juliet balcony with no external platform is one of the recognised exceptions, because there is nothing to stand on and nothing new to overlook from. Conservation areas and listed buildings are a separate conversation, so check with your planning department if either applies to you.
Do I need building regulations approval?
Guarding an opening at first floor level is exactly what this balcony is doing, so building control will usually have an interest in it.
We will make it to whatever specification your project requires, and regularly do. What we will not do is decide on your behalf what your building has to comply with. We are a fabricator, not your building control body, and confirming what is required is a job for your building control officer or your design team. Our balcony and Juliet building regulations guide is a good starting point.
Not the size in the list?
The widths above are the everyday ones rather than the limit of what we make. Everything leaves the factory made to order anyway, so an odd size is not a special favour and it does not usually cost dramatically more. Complexity drives the price, not bespokeness. Call 0114 243 9009 or email sales@diomet.co.uk with the width and we will price it.

- Wembley - if you would rather have a rail after all, with the fixings hidden inside it

- The full Juliet balcony range - curved, flat, ornate, stainless and frameless glass
Fixings
Every fixing needed to assemble the balcony is supplied with it.
Wall and floor fixings are not supplied on a supply only order. The right anchor depends on what your building is made of and what condition it is in, and that is not a call we can make from here. Fixing points come drilled ready and your installer selects anchors to suit the substrate. Where we install, we take that decision on site and provide them.
Survey and installation
We survey, we install nationwide with our own teams, and we sell supply only if you have your own fitter. The detail is in the product description above. For a price on your job, email us your postcode.
